Chick-fil-A, known for its southern-style chicken sandwiches, is taking over the former Steak 'n Shake spot in Michigan City, where it plans to build a new restaurant soon.
The Atlanta-based chain, which has fast-food restaurants in Hobart, Schererville and Valparaiso, filed plans with the city to build a new restaurant at5809 Franklin St. It's looking to start construction in the near future.
“While we are still in the early process, we are happy to share that construction will begin soon on Chick-fil-A Michigan City. The restaurant is slated to open in early 2025, pending any delays. Each locally owned and operated restaurant creates 80-120 jobs in the community area. In celebration of the opening, Chick-fil-A, Inc. will donate $25,000 to Feeding America, where the funds will be distributed to a local partner to aid in the fight against hunger," a Chick-fil-A spokesperson said.

Steak 'n Shake, the Indianapolis-based1950s-style diner known for its steakburgers, shakes, chili and ribbon fries, closed its Michigan City location early this year. It had closed in 2019, but found a new franchisee who reopened it two years later with the addition of ordering kiosks.
Chick-fil-A acquired the property and is planning to tear the building down. It will build a new fast food restaurant serving its signature chicken breast sandwiches,chicken nuggets, waffle fries, kale salads and sweet tea.
"The restaurant will also feature indoor seating, an outdoor seating area and a dual-lane drive-thru focused on expediting and elevating the guest experience. We look forward to serving new guests delicious food in an environment of genuine hospitality," a Chick-fil-A spokesperson said. "We look forward to sharing more about this restaurant, including hours of operation and care for the community, closer to the opening."
Chick-fil-A also acquired a former Steak 'n Shake restaurant at 1917 Pipestone Road in Benton Township in neighboring Southwest Michigan. It also razed it and raised up a new eatery that's slated to open in November.
Chick-fil-A, whose name is a play on filet of chicken, often draws such long lines it has dual drive-throughs to handle the customers. It has cow mascots that wave signs saying "Eat Mor Chikin," a playful joke about how burger restaurants otherwise dominate the fast-food landscape.
It is closed on Sundays to give its employees the Sabbath off. Originally a southern restaurant, it now operates more than 3,000 restaurants nationwide.
